A Story About Identity and Belonging

Dazzle is a young zebra living amongst a large herd of zebras. Although she looks similar to the zebras around her, she experiences the world differently and doesn’t understand why.

Dazzle is often teased by the other zebras, but she desperately wants to fit in and belong. Seeking her grandmother’s advice, together they carefully change the way she speaks, behaves, moves, and even looks, hoping that if she tries hard enough she will finally be accepted and have friends.

But pretending to be someone else is exhausting.

As Dazzle struggles to navigate friendship, belonging, and the growing pressure to hide her true self, she begins to discover that connection should not require her to disappear in the process.

Written by autistic developmental educator, autism consultant and artist Melanie Martinelli, Dazzle is a gentle and emotionally honest illustrated story exploring themes of masking, autistic identity, generational masking, sensory experience, burnout, friendship, and self-acceptance.

Inspired by the real behaviours of Grévy’s zebras, the story draws gently from narrative therapy principles and reflects on the ways people may learn to camouflage themselves through love, protection, and the desire to be accepted. It also explores the generational nature of masking, and how elders may pass down the techniques that once helped them survive and belong, even when those same strategies can quietly lead someone to lose parts of themselves along the way.

Created for autistic readers, families, educators, therapists, and anyone who has ever felt different, Dazzle offers a compassionate reflection on what it means to belong without hiding who you are.

Perfect for:

  • Autistic teens and adults
  • Neurodiversity-affirming classrooms and therapy spaces
  • Parents, carers, and educators
  • Discussions around masking, identity, and belonging
  • Readers who enjoy thoughtful illustrated narratives with emotional depth
